The collection of the Sociology and Communication Sciences Library includes all books, periodicals, electronic resources and audiovisual material acquired with UDC budgets, external financing and those donated by individuals or legal entities.
The process of acquisition of bibliographic and documentary material is different depending on the support and the material you request (book, audiovisual, electronic resource, journal).
You can take part in the selection process by sending us acquisition recommendations.
Remember that before sending us any recommendation you must check in the library catalog if the title is already available in any of the UDC libraries.
The library/commission will evaluate each of the recommendations taking into account issues such as the subject, availability in other UDC libraries, the way of access, budget and if they are part of the bibliography/resources recommended by teaching staff.
We will send you by email information about any matter related to your request or will tell you in person if you come to the library.
Check if there are items available in any UDC library or if you have access to the full text.
Search in the library catalog.
We will evaluate your recommendation taking into account, in addition to the subject matter and budget availability, the availability in other UDC libraries and whether it is a recommended bibliography or not.
Send us as many bibliographic data as you have so we can identify without ambiguity the title.
We will contact you if we can´t find what you request.
Keep in mind that, if you don´t specify the edition you want, we will always acquire the most recent edition.
In case of the audiovisual material you are requesting for is not one of the recommended titles of any subject, you must add in the field of "Additional information" a brief description of why you consider important that we acquire it.
Please, check before in the catalog and in the databases section to know if the resource is already subscribed.
In this case, the evaluation and approval of your recommendation follows a different procedure from that of books and audio visual material.
All the request we receive are assessed in the Inter-center Library Commission of Sociology and Communication Sciences. This commission assesses, among others, issues such as access to the resource, price, kind of license or number of concurrent users.
The commission meets at least twice a year so, if you consider it urgent to subscribe any resource, please contact us by email (soc.bib@udc.es).
Check before library catalog if full text is possible.
As with electronic resources, appraisal and approval of your recommendation follows a different procedure from that of books and audiovisual material.
You must take in account:
a) Subscription management is dealed centrally by the Central Library.
b) Subscrition is made annualy, which means that new journal titles can only be ordered once a year.
c) We give priority to the electronic format subscription if the journal is both published in that format and on paper since that guarantee access to it to the entire university community.
d) We have non-duplicity policy for printed journals. We won´t subscribe a print journal which is already subscribed in another UDC library.
e) Central Library will open a period along the year in which they will request us that we send them the proposal of new orders for the following year.
f) Intercenter Library Commission of Sociology and Communication Sciences or the deans of the faculties and the library director, after evaluating all the applications received, will send the proposal for new orders/cancellations for the following year, ensuring that the budget increase is 0. We will order new journals for a similar cost to that of cancellations.
Books & audio visual material
If the library assess the recommendation positively, we will enter data in the library database and we will order it to one of our providers.
From that moment on, if you search for the requested title in the catalog you would see, in addition to data such as the title, publisher and/or author/s, information on the number of copies requested and the date on which they were requested from the provider, a note indicating "On order".
If the result of the assessment evaluation is negative or if we can´t get your requested title we will contact you via email explaining you why we have rejected your recommendation or why we can´t acquire this material, for example, because it is sold out.
Electronic resources and journals
After the Intercenter Library Commission meeting, we will notify you by email whether the evaluation is positive and therefore the acquisition/ordering process will begin, as if the evaluation is negative, explaining you of the reasons to dismiss your request.
We will send you three types of notices by email:
1. Reception in the library: the material you requested has already arrived at the library and is available for consultation.
Asunto: Información sobre o seu pedido
Texto: Informámolo/a con respeto ao pedido no que está interesado/a::
Título
Sinatura
Mensaxe : Recibiuse o exemplar.
2. Impossibility to process the order:
Material you requested is out of stock and we can´t buy it. In this case, as long as there are no copies available in the UDC, you could draw on Interlibrary Loan Service by filling in an application form.
3. Application rejected: material you requested is not suitable to our collection because of its subject, at that time we don´t have budgetary availability or it´s available in other UDC libraries.
After the approval of the new contract law, as a general rule and except for specific exceptions of which we´ll inform you by email.
Books
Published in Spain: 15-20 days.
Published in Europe or U.S.: 20-25 days
Published in South America: in this case the term varies depending on the country and the publisher. If the publisher doesn´´t have distributor in Spain, the period is 2-3 months
Audio visual material
In this case, the term varies depending on the distributor to whom we send the order. The usual term is 20-25 days.
It´s relevant for us that you indicate if the title requested belongs to one recommended bibliography (please indicate the subject and the course in which it is taught).
Before the beginning of each term the library checks information sources that appear in the teaching guides of each subject and degree.
If you are a lecturer and you are going to recommend a document that doesn´t appear in the teaching guide, please, request it as soon as possible so that it´s available when you teach the subject.
If you are a student and there is a title that has been recommended in class but it doesn´t appear in the teaching guide, please, request us its acquisition.
Donation is one of the ways of acquiring documentary holdings, free of charge in terms of the cost of the material but which involves a cost of working time, storage and conservation that make it necessary to establish criteria for acceptance.
Categories
a) Typical small donations.
b) Donations of documentary holdings exceptional for their large volume or special value.
Assessment process
a) Small donations that we receive without having requested them are assessed according to criteria such as: adequacy to the collection, availability in other UDC libraries, if the full-text is available in open access, the forecast of use or the publishing quality.
b) Exceptional donations follow a different valuation and acceptance procedure. The natural or legal person must provide us with information about the content, history, volume and chronology of the documentary holdings he/she wishes to donate. Based on this information, we prepare a report taking into account the holdings usefulness within the library collection, storage space available, the value of donation and the cost of the technical process estimated. It will also be assessed if holdings will require special storage and/or use conditions.
Library reserves the right to accept or reject a donation.
Please, contact with the library previously (biblioteca.socioloxiaecomunicacion@udc.gal) if you want to do a donation.
