The journal Sao Paulo Medical Journal publishes the study entitled “Health outcomes and medical response during a military deployment in Iraq: a prospective observational study of morbidity, treatments, and evacuations”, with the participation of doctoral students and research staff from several institutions, including the Universidade da Coruña, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Universidad de Huelva, among others.

This work analyzes health outcomes and medical response during the deployment of the Spanish contingent in Iraq, evaluating morbidity, treatments applied, and the need for medical evacuation in a real operational context.

The study forms part of the PhD thesis by publication of doctoral candidate David Rodríguez Avellaneda, linked to the research group, reinforcing advanced training and the generation of competitive scientific knowledge within GISAP.

The publication is available in open access, facilitating the dissemination of results to the scientific and professional community. The main findings highlight the predominance of non-combat-related conditions (primarily traumatic, infectious, and digestive), as well as the high resolution capacity of healthcare at the deployment site, with a low rate of medical evacuation.

This work provides relevant evidence for healthcare planning, injury prevention, and the optimization of healthcare resources in complex operational environments, strengthening interinstitutional collaboration and the international impact of research in the health field.
