Course Leader: Dr Ilham Polukhov
Home Institution: Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction
Course pre-requisites: Strength of materials, Theoretical Mechanics, Building mechanics
Course Overview
This course is designed to introduce the behaviour and design of Metal constructions materials (steel and aluminium alloys) and steel structural members. The behaviour and design of tension members, compression members, laterally restrained and unrestrained beams, beam-columns and design of connections will be discussed.
The objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge to properly design steel structures and be able to provide proper construction details for their design. Course examples will cover both Load and Resistance Factors Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) design.
Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to obtain basic knowledge about the design and failure mode of steel structural members after finished this course. Students attending the class will learn how to design structural steel elements and connections.

Assessment
Knowledge of a student is graded on the maximum 100-point grading scale. Students obtained 50 points in a semester and other 50 points in an exam. These are included in 50 points obtained in a semester: attendance at lessons – 10 points, student’s presentations on the topics – 10 points, results of seminars or laboratory lessons – 30 points. If a coursework is determined on the subject then it is awarded 20 points for the seminar and laboratory lessons, 10 points for presentation of coursework.
Amount of points that a student obtained must not be less 17 points. A student who does not participate more than 30 per cent of all teaching hours of a subject is not allowed take this subject exam.
According to the amount of obtained total points, knowledge of a student is evaluated below in European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
