The Philadelphia Papers
on Linguistic Anthropology
from the 97th Annual
Meeting of the American Anthropological Association
Philadelphia, Dec. 2-6, 1998
This web site so far: http://www.udc.es/dep/lx/cac/aaa1998/
This site contains some papers on linguistic anthropology presented at the 1998 Annual Meeting of the AAA. Listing is alphabetical by author(s). For easier retrieval, several versions of each paper have been prepared:
![]() |
HTML -- hypertext versions for quicker viewing. In some papers with special fonts, graphic pages have been prepared. |
![]() ![]() |
Word, WordPerfect -- the original documents. These versions should be suitable for citation. However, keep in mind that your software default settings may override the specifications of the downloaded document. Also, you may need to download and install special fonts. Click or right-click (whatever works) on the links to download papers and fonts. |
![]() |
RTF -- Rich Text File versions. These versions are transportable between wordprocessors and platforms. You may encounter the same problems as above. Sometimes conversion niftly messes up special characters. |
![]() |
PDF -- Portable Document Format
versions. These are undoubtedly the most transportable and reliable versions. Even though
a little larger than the original files, PDF files are probably the best standard on the
Web for retrieving and printing any document from any platform just as originally
designed. Unfortunately, not all papers have been converted to PDF (I myself don't use a
Mac to display Word for Mac originals with special fonts). You'll need to have a PDF viewer, such as the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Acrobat Reader installs a plug-in in the most popular web browsers so that by clicking on the document the Reader is launched and documents are viewed instantly (what a sentence!). Documents cannot be edited, just viewed and printed (for easier plagiarizing and/or for impersonating the author, you may have to resort to the other versions). With PDF documents, you don't need to worry about installing special fonts or configuring your wordprocessor. These versions are perfectly suitable for citation. |
This about wraps up The Philadelphia Papers experiment. It is hoped that next year, somewhere, somehow, someone takes on this job to continue the series of papers on linguistic anthropology from the AAA Meetings. I don't know what for, but anyway.
Please send contributions and report problems and errors to Celso Alvarez-Cáccamo, lxalvarz@udc.es.
Thank you all: bold contributors, shy onlookers, and aeternal skeptics.
