This book is the result of the international conference “Irregular Migrations in Europe: A Perspective from the Sea Basins”, organized with a hybrid format by the “Salvador de Madariaga” University Institute of European Studies (IUEE) at the University of A Coruña (Spain) on 22 October 2021. The IUEE is a member of the Jean Monnet Network “Migration and Asylum Policies Systems: weaknesses, Shortcomings and Reform Proposals” (MAPS co-funded by the European Commission and led by the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, whose members include eight other universities from eight different European countries (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University, University of Malta, University of Innsbruck, Queen Mary University of London, Goce Delcev University-Stip, Sarajevo School of Science and Technology University (SSST), and the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder)). The topics addressed focus on showing the complexity, dynamism and fragmentation of the phenomenon of irregular migration by sea in Europe. These issues have been approached from a novel perspective, i.e. that of the different European sea basins defined within the common European maritime area in which the phenomenon of irregular migration poses the greatest challenges. In this regard, the migration routes in the Eastern Mediterranean, Central Mediterranean, Western Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean (i.e. from the western coasts of Africa to the Canary Islands), are particularly important. Additionally, several cross-cutting issues have been also studied as it is considered they affect each and every one of these basins, shedding light on several problems inherent to the migratory phenomenon in a maritime environment. |
