Begoña Crespo obtained an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1992 and a PhD in English Linguistics in 2001, with a dissertation on semantic change in Middle English and early Modern English. From October 1994 to October 1996 she worked as a researcher and scholarship holder in the English Department of Santiago de Compostela. In October 1996 she became a lecturer and researcher in the University of A Coruña. It was in January 2008 that she obtained a position as tenured Senior Lecturer. She has also carried out research and/or taught at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela, Edinburgh, Castellón, London, Cambridge, Lancaster, Turin and Kaunas. She is a Full Professor in English Linguistics at the University of A Coruña. She has taught several courses, at undergraduate and posgraduate levels, on the English Language, Etymology, Dialectology, English Grammar, History of the English Language, History and Culture of the English-Speaking Countries, Translation Studies, Linguistic Models, Variation and Change, Corpus Linguistics and Varieties of English. She has published on lexicon enlargement in the History of English, genre/text-type taxonomy and the diachrony of English scientific writing, corpus compilation and corpus exploitation for discursive purposes, especially female language uses in writing science. She has supervised five PhD dissertations and is currently supervising two more on the language of science and on intercultural relations. She has published in journals such as Studia Neophilologica, Nordic Journal of English Studies, Neuphilologische Mitteilungen, English Studies, Studia Anglica Posnaniensia and Literary and Linguistic Computing, among others, as well as book chapters in D.S Brewer, Rodopi, Peter Lang, Lincom Europa or John Benjamins. She has also participated and/or coordinated several regional, national and European projects.

She has been working as Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Philology being responsible for cultural activities, language standardisation and students internships from 2005 to 2013 where she served as the Erasmus Coordinator for eight years. After that she perfomed the role of Head of the English Department. From 2014 onwards she has been acting as the coordinator of the PALDI programme at UDC (Language support programme for teaching in English). In 2016 she took on the duties of Head of the UDC International Office being also Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation and Cooperation. In 2018 she became the coordinator of the UDC International Summer School. From 2020 she has worked as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for International Promotion and Language Policy as well as Head of the UDC Language Centre. She is currently the secretary of the Language Policy working sub-group under the Internationalisation and Cooperation working group. She has served as an external evaluator for research projects and has been recently entitled to assess European projects proposals by the Spanish National Agency (SEPIE).
