The Research Group for Multidimensional Corpus-Based Studies in English (MuStE)

MuStE is a research group at the University of A Coruña, although some researchers from other institutions also collaborate with us. At the same time, the group is a partner of the interuniversity research centre CLAVIER. MuStE members have been developing different projects funded by the University of A Coruña, the Xunta de Galicia, the Spanish Government and other private entities.

MuStE members study the development of the English language from a variety of perspectives, focusing both on language change and language variation from the Middle Ages to present-day English, resorting mainly to empirical research. Our works mix traditional philological knowledge together with new approaches.

Among our main research lines, the following can be found:

  • Discourse analysis in the history of English
  • Language change in English: lexical and semantic change
  • English morphology and vocabulary
  • Register variation and syntax
  • Corpus linguistics and corpus compilation
  • Discourse and gender
  • (Pseudo)Scientific register

One of the team's major projects is the compilation of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing, and the development of the Coruña Corpus Tool, CCT, (in collaboration with the IRLab team, department of Computer Science at UDC).

The analysis of language change and variation (within particular periods) entails the study of other fields of knowledge and disciplines not entirely classifiable as corpus linguistics proper. Therefore, some incursions in the History of the English-speaking world, the History of Science and other related areas are necessary.

MuStE members are very active in attending prestigious conferences and publishing.

Isabel Moskowich obtained an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) in 1987 and a PhD in English Linguistics in 1993, with a dissertation on sociolinguistic aspects of the Scandinavian lexicon of Middle English. From October 1989 to February 1994 she worked as a researcher and lecturer in the English Department of Santiago de Compostela. In February 1994 she became a lecturer and researcher in the University of A Coruña (UDC) and in June 1995 she obtained a position as tenured Senior Lecturer. She became a Tenured Full Professor in 2018. She has also carried out research and/or taught at the Universities of Nottingham, Edinburgh, Columbia at New York, La Laguna, Castellón, Vigo, London and Cambridge.

Isabel has supervised the PhD dissertations of Begoña Crespo (2001), Elena Alfaya (2002), Ana Montoya (2003), Inés Lareo (2006), Gonzalo Camiña Rioboó (2013), Leticia Regueiro-Naya (2014) and Leida Maria Monaco (2017). She is currently supervising the PhDs of Estefanía Sánchez Barreiro and Anabella Barsaglini Castro, among others. She was actively involved in the organisation of the First International Conference of English Philology at the University of A Coruña, together with Prof. Santiago Fernández y González-Corugedo and was responsible for the organisation of the 3 following editions up to 2004. In 2006 she also organised the 17th SELIM (Spanish Society for Mediaeval English Language and Literature) Conference. Later on, in May 2010, together with some members of the team she organised the Second International Conference of the Spanish Society of Corpus Linguistics and has actively collaborated in the organisation of different editions of IWoDA.

Isabel serves in the executive and editorial board of SELIM, LFE, Revista de Lenguas y Lingüística Aplicadas, Research in Corpus Linguistics, and has also acted as a reviewer for other journals.

Her main research interests are language contact and language change (especially in Middle English), word-formation processes and other processes of lexicon enlargement in the History of English, genre/text-type taxonomy and the diachronic development of scientific English writing as well as sex/gender and discourse.

She teaches History of the English Language (undergraduate, 4th year), and a postgraduate course on Corpus Linguistics in iMAES.

She was elected Head of the Department of English Philology (UDC) in March and held this position until 2013.

Elena Alfaya obtained an MA in Germanic Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1994 and a PhD in English Historical Linguistics in 2002. Her dissertation dealt with the geographical localization of several homonymous Mediaeval English manuscripts of the Cursor Mundi. From 1998 to 2000 she was a postgraduate worker and scholarship holder in the Department of Linguistics of the University of Edinburgh. In November 2001 she became an Associate Lecturer at CESUGA-University College Dubin. In October 2003 she obtained a position as an “Isidro Parga Pondal” researcher at the University of A Coruña and in October 2004 she became a Lecturer and Researcher in the area of Information and Documentation Science at the University of A Coruña.

She directed and actively organised the “First International Research Conference on Information and Documentation Science” (I Encuentro Internacional de Investigación en Ciencias de la Información y Documentación) at the Faculty of Humanities, University of A Coruña, and was responsible for the organisation of the following edition. She was also actively involved in the organization of many other Conferences and Exhibits.

Elena has also experience both in reviewing and editing manuscripts.

Her main research interests are historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, gender studies and mind-consciousness studies. She is a member of the Mindfulness Association and has been certified as a Mindfulness instructor.

She teaches Historical Archives and Records Management, Council Archives, Scientific Research Techniques (undergraduate, 4th year), Information Management and Archivistics (undergraduate, 1st year) and Cataloguing of Electronic Resources (undergraduate, 3rd year).

Begoña Crespo obtained an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1992 and a PhD in English Linguistics in 2001, with a dissertation on semantic change in Middle English and early Modern English. From October 1994 to October 1996 she worked as a researcher and scholarship holder in the English Department of Santiago de Compostela. In October 1996 she became a lecturer and researcher in the University of A Coruña and from October 2005 to January 2008 she has been Senior Lecturer. It was in January 2008 that she obtained a position as tenured Senior Lecturer. She has also carried out research and/or taught at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela, Edinburgh, Castellón, London and Cambridge.

Begoña is currently supervising the PhDs of Paula Lojo Sandino, Dolores Elvira Méndez Souto and Irma González Souto. She was actively involved in the organisation of the Second, Third and Fourth International Conference of English Philology at the University of A Coruña, together with Dr. Isabel Moskowich. In 2006 she also organised the 17th SELIM (Spanish Society for Mediaeval English Language and Literature) Conference together with Dr. Isabel Moskowich, as well as the Second International Conference on Corpus Linguistics (CILC-10), one of the activities of AELINCO.

Her main research interests are word-formation processes and other processes of lexicon enlargement in the History of English, genre/text-type taxonomy and the diachronic development of scientific writing in English.

She teaches a monograph on English Grammar, Morphology and Syntax (undergraduate, 3rd year), and two postgraduate courses in iMAES, Linguistic Models: Formal, functional, cognitive and Variation and Change in English. Begoña has also taught Etymology (undergraduate, 4th year), a postgraduate course on Corpus Linguistics together with Isabel Moskowich, and a subject on English Usage and Standardisation in the Master entitled "Lingua e Usos Profesionais: Español, Galego, Inglés".

Emma Lezcano graduated in English Language and Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1990. From February 1992 to June 2001 she worked as an associate and assistant lecturer in the English Department of the University of A Coruña. Eventually, in June 2001 she obtained a position as tenured Lecturer (with no research duties), which she has been holding so far. She has taught a wide variety of courses, all about different aspects of the English language: Scientific English, Writing techniques, History of the English language and several EFL courses. At the moment she teaches an English Grammar course (mainly syntax) in 4th year and four general English courses for undergraduates. Her main interests have always been related to her teaching subjects, and her research has to do with the fields of English Language, TEFL, applied Linguisics as well as syntax, from a synchronic and diachronic point of view. She is writing a PhD dissertation under the supervision of Drs. Teresa Fanego and Elena Seoane from the University of Santiago. The topic of her dissertation is the study of relativization strategies in the Early Modern period and the data have been taken from the Helsinki Corpus.

She has also been a keen contributor to many academic activities organized at the University. For example, she has participated in the organization of several conferences, like the 7th SEDERI Conference and the first three editions of the International Conference of English Philology at the University of A Coruña.

Within her interest in English Language and EFL, she is actively involved in the convergence process in Higher Education and participated in the ECTS pilot project promoted by the ACSUG (Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System). Likewise, she is currently one of the Academic Coordinators of the University Language Center. She is also in charge of the coordination of research activities on Applied Linguistics in the Research Group for Multidimensional Corpus-Based Studies in English (MuStE).

Ana Montoya Reyes obtained an MA in Germanic Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela and a PhD in English Historical Linguistics from the University of A Coruña in 2003. Her dissertation dealt with the development of written Standard English from a morphological perspective and focusing on the written legacy of the men in the Paston family.

From 2003 to 2014 she taught Business Communications and Technical English as a lecturer at Centro de Estudios Superiores de Galicia, a centre associated to University College Dublin, National University of Ireland. There, she taught in two degrees: Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Architecture. She has also been a lecturer at University of San Jorge (USJ) from 2014 to 2019 in ADE (degree in Business Administration and Management) as well as in the Bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relation, teaching Business English, Communication Skills, Spanish and English for Advertising and Public Relationships. She has also taught English for Tourism at Centro de Estudios de Nuevas Profesiones (CENP) in the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and in the Program of Simultaneity of the degree in Tourism and the Degree in Business Sciences (2016-2020). At present, she is teaching at the University of A Coruña in the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and in the Program of Simultaneity of the degree in Tourism and the Degree in Business.

Her research interests are historical linguistics, lexicography and corpus linguistics as well as English for specific purposes, focusing on English for Tourism.

Luis obtained a BA in English Philology from the University of A Coruña in 2009, and an MA in Secondary School Teaching from the aforementioned University in 2010. He obtained his PhD in June 2017 with a dissertation about the use of conditional structures in English Scientific Writing from 1700 to 1900.

He is now enjoying a postdoctoral research scholarship awarded by Xunta de Galicia, working as a visiting scholar at the University of Birmingham for the period 2018-2020.

His main research interests are diachronic and synchronic syntax, development of scientific writing, and corpus linguistics. Other research interests are new technologies and (social) media. In addition, he is deeply interested in the popularisation of scientific knowledge.

Luis has been collaborating with MUSTE since October 2008, when he was awarded an undergraduate scholarship by Xunta de Galicia. He obtained a PhD scholarship as part of the Xunta de Galicia's I2C program for the period 2011-2014, allowing him to teach several undergraduate subjects. He visited the University of Birmingham as a visiting researcher in February-March 2014 and January-May 2015.

Anabella graduated in English Language and Literature at the University of A Coruña in 2016. In the same year, she also collaborated in the English Department, thanks to a scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (MECD). She obtained an MA in English Language and Linguistics from the aforementioned University in 2017.

Her main interests have always been related to ICTs and Linguistics in an attempt to create attractive and innovative resources that facilitate teaching. She is writing a PhD dissertation and her research has to do with the fields of corpus linguistics and applied linguistics (especially discourse analysis, pragmatics and stylistics). Other research interests are the development of the English language and cognitive grammar.

Between September and November 2019 she was a visiting research student at the University of Liverpool (UK) thanks to a grant awarded by INDITEX-UDC 2019. She is currently enjoying a PhD scholarship as part of the Xunta de Galicia's FSE Galicia 2014-2020 program.

Paula Lojo is working on her PhD dissertation, which deals with the use of the passive voice in scientific discourse. She is using mathematical and historical texts from the 18th and 19th centuries, written by British and Irish authors, in order to see if language contact makes any difference in both countries.

She works with languages in contact, bilingualism and language influence.

She obtained her bachelor's degree and her master's degree in English Studies from the University of A Coruña in 2006 and 2008, respectively. After spending a year teaching Spanish at the College of the Holy Cross (Massachusetts, U.S.A.), she became a PhD student. For two years (2010-2012) she held a pre-doctoral scholarship, awarded by the Xunta de Galicia, to carry on teaching and research activities in the English Department at the UDC. In 2014 she obtained her PhD in English linguistics, with a dissertation about nominalization in Late Modern English scientific texts. From 2014 to 2018 she worked as a Postdoctoral assistant (Akademische Mitarbeiterin) at the Department of Translation and Interpretation (Institut für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen) at Heidelberg University (Germany), where she taught Applied Linguistics courses and learnt experimental methodologies. Since September 2018 she works as Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Spanish, Modern, and Classical Languages at the University of the Balearic Islands, where she teaches ESP courses.

María José obtained her BA in English Philology in 1996 at her home University in Castelló. She started the Phd program and thanks to a grant awarded by the Stevenson Foundation and the Spanish Ministry of External Affairs spent a year in the English Language dept of the University of Edinburgh. She returned to Spain to complete her doctoral thesis (European) about the diachronic evolution of medical language in the field of ophthalmology in 2003. She has visited the Universities of Nottingham and Glasgow several times, and attended different international conferences and meetings.

Since 2001, she started to teach part-time in the English Studies department at the Universitat Jaume I. In 2004, she obtained a full-time post as a lecturer, and in 2007 she won a permanent position. She teaches a course about diachronic linguistics in the fourth year of English Philology, and she also teaches several courses on the evolution and change in scientific English in the doctoral program of her department. She collaborates as a full member of MuStE since 2006, and is currently working in the Coruña Corpus Project. She has supervised a Phd on lexicology, and is currently supervising a thesis on medieval English. She is a member of the Board of the Catalan Society for the History of Science. Also, she has been director of IULMA (Instituto Interuniversitario de Lenguas Modernas Aplicadas) for six years and has been vicedean of the Humanitites Faculty until July 2018. During the academic year 2019/20 she has benefitted from a sabbatical year visiting the English Language Dpt at the University of Glasgow.

She has organised several conferences, such as the SELIM (Spanish Society for English Medieval Language and Literature) conference in 1995 and 2014, the AHLM (Asociación Española de Lengua y Literatura Inglesa Medieval) in 1996 among many others. She has been visiting the ASNC department in Cambridge as Honorary Researcher.

Her main research interests are the evolution of scientific English and its specialised lexicon, medieval texts and manuscripts, corpus linguistics and etymology.

Marta González Orta is graduated in English Philology (1996) and holds a Ph.D. from La Laguna University (2003). Her research is mainly focused on the study of the interrelationship between syntax, semantics and lexis within Old English verbal classes. She has published widely on these matters in international journals and monographic volumes. She is also interested in the diachronic development of nominalisation processes in Modern English scientific texts and has carried out research on philosophical writing. She is currently working on the parsing process of complex sentences in controlled natural languages.

Inés Lareo obtained an MA in English Philology from the University of A Coruña in 1997 and a PhD in English Linguistics in 2006, with a dissertation on semantic, syntactic and sociolinguistic aspects of the use of collocations in Late Modern English. From October 1999 to February 2004 she worked as a researcher in the English Department of A Coruña. She has also carried out research at the Universities of Köln (Germany), Berkeley (USA), Vigo (Spain), Aachen (Germany), Castelló (Spain), Cork (Ireland), Berlin (Germany), Valencia (Spain), Las Palmas (Spain), Heidelberg (Germany).

Her main research interests are lexicography, historical linguistics and corpus linguistics. She has also focused her attention on grammatical and sociolinguistic aspects of the use of collocations in English scientific writing.

She has taught: History of the English Language, English Etymology, English Language Issues, American Literature and English Literature.

Margarita Mele-Marrero is tenured Senior Lecturer of the Departamento de Filología Inglesa y Alemana at the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL) since 2002. Her university career started by the end of 1990 as lecturer and researcher, completing her PhD on English cant language in 1998. Previously she had worked as Spanish assistant teacher in Ireland for a year and on her return had obtained a position as Secondary school teacher.

Her research interests have been mainly centred on English Historical Linguistics, being her most relevant publications on the Old and Early Modern English periods. These have been approached from an initial Philological perspective moving to a more recent Pragmatics (stance and evidentiality) theoretical frame. Additional scholarly concerns and publications have to do with the Globalization of English and Comparative Linguistics. She has collaborated with different Research projects and is an active member of the interdisciplinary Institute IEMyR (Instituto de Estudios Medievales y Renacentistas at ULL) since its beginnings in 1990 contributing to the organization of its annual seminars as well as in other main Conferences held in Tenerife: SELIM (1999), AEDEAN (2017) and SEDERI (2020) among others.

In her teaching she has also covered the same fields in graduate (Grado en Estudios Ingleses) and postgraduate courses (Máster de Estudios Medievales, MEMULL): History of the English language, Medieval Philology, Academic Writing and English. In the academic administration she has held the positions of Coordinator of the linguistics area (2001-2005; 2008-2010), coordinator of the English Studies degree (2009-2013) and Head of the Department (2018-2020) Margarita serves in the editorial board of of RLFE, Revista de Lenguas y Lingüística Aplicadas and she is currently the Secretary of RCEI.

Leida Maria Monaco pursued her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the UDC. She obtained her MA in English Language and Literature in 2008. Between 2010 and 2014 she was a postgraduate researcher in the FPU programme, which allowed her to collaborate as a teaching assistant in the English department of the UDC. During that time, she also stayed as a visiting student at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (France) and Lancaster University (UK). After that, she continued her research career while teaching English as a foreign language with children and adults in different schools and language academies, as well as working as a part time research assistant for MuStE.

She obtained her PhD in June 2017 with a dissertation studying register variation in Late Modern English scientific texts. She is interested in the technical and methodological aspects of corpus linguistics, while she also enjoys teaching English as a foreign language.

Estefanía Sánchez obtained an MA in English Language from the University of A Coruña in 2004 and a PhD in English Historical Linguistics in 2020. Her dissertation dealt with the use of extenders in English scientific writing in the eighteenth century. She has worked as a full-time English and Spanish teacher and has been collaborating with the MUSTE group since 2005. She was contracted as a research assistant for different projects “Recompilación e etiquetaxe electrónica de textos científico-técnicos en lingua inglesa entre os séculos XVII e XX (2): Coruña Corpus” or “Discurso científico e muller: Contexto social e variación na lingua inglesa (1700-1930)” (both funded by Xunta de Galicia).

Her main research interests are word-formation processes in the History of English and the diachronic study of extenders in scientific English.

Nuria Bello-Piñón obtained an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of A Coruña in 2004. She is currently carrying out her PhD research in English Historical Linguistics with a dissertation on the processes of borrowing and code-switching in Scientific English from the 18th and 19th centuries. This dissertation is focused on the analysis of samples belonging to the disciplines of astronomy and philosophy written in the period of Late Modern English.

Her main research interests are borrowing as a process of lexicon enlargement in the History of English, processes resulting from language contact, such as code-switching, etymology, genre/text-type taxonomy and the diachronic development of scientific English writing.

From october 2007 to february 2009, Nuria also assisted Dr. Isabel Moskowich in teaching her monograph on English Language Issues (undergraduate, 2nd year). In addition, Nuria assisted Dr. Begoña Crespo from January to June 2009 in teaching her monograph on English Etymology (undergraduate, 4th year) respectively.

Gonzalo Camiña obtained a degree in English Philology from the University of A Coruña in 1999. From October 2001 he has worked as a researcher and teaching scholar in the Department of English Philology in University of A Coruña. In October 2005 he became foreign language demonstrator and researcher in University College Cork (Ireland), and in September 2007 he obtained a position as College Language Teacher in the Department of Hispanic Studies in the same university. He became a language assistant at the University of Ulster (UK) in September 2008, and has also carried out research at the Universities Christian Albrechts Universität zu Kiel and Universität Osnabrück (Germany). In 2011 he returned to his former position in Ireland and in 2013 he obtained a PhD in computational linguistics.

Gonzalo was actively involved in the organisation of the III and IV International Congresses of English Philology in University of A Coruña, together with Dr. Isabel Moskowich, and also the IV International Congress of Translation Studies in University of A Coruña, together with Dr. Luis Soto. In June 2008 he organised the International congress Time and Words: Examining Contemporary Galician Culture, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Irish Centre for Galician Studies at University College Cork.

His main research interests are word-formation processes and other processes of lexicon enlargement in the History of English, the diachronic development of scientific English writing, and computational linguistics.

Małgorzata's passion for languages and culture prompted her to obtain a BA degree in English Studies at SWPS University in Warsaw (2008). She then started her professional career as EFL Teacher, and discovered her interests in adult teaching and cross-cultural communication. In 2012, she moved on with her studies to get more insight into English Language and Linguistics; she now holds two M.A. degrees conferred by the University of A Coruña: Language and its Professional Use (2013), and IMAES (Inter University Master in Advanced English Studies) (2016).

Małgorzata began her PhD studies in 2017 at UDC, in order to pursue her research on persuasion techniques that are characteristic for different types of online promotional discourse. Her main areas of research interest include discourse analysis, online communication, marketing and promotional discourse, cognitive capitalism, social cognition, cognitive psychology, and multimodal analysis.

Leticia Regueiro Naya

PhD, Former member

Her main research interests are diachronic as well as synchronic syntax. Her PhD research involved a cross-study analysis of the evolution of periphrastic do from the Early Modern English period to the end of the 20th century.

She teaches English at the Official School of Languages in Lugo (Spain).

Víctor Sánchez Riveiro

MA, Former member

Víctor worked with the MuStE research team while writing his doctoral dissertation on compounding and derivation in modern scientific English, which combined morphology, etymology, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis in his study of nouns in scientific English texts of different disciplines dating from 1700 to 1900.

Víctor's research interests included historical linguistics, modern English scientific vocabulary, word formation processes, nominalisations, genre and text-type.

Sofía Zea

PhD, Former member

Sofía Zea obtained an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of A Coruña in 2004. She has obtained her PhD about the distribution of the attributive adjective in scientific English texts from 18th and 19th centuries.

Her main interests are Sociolinguistics and Corpus Linguistics.

Lately, she has been working as a teacher of English and Spanish as a Second Language at CCI Formation Grenoble, ETC Logos Group and Université Grenoble Alpes.

Research

Funded research projects


Between 1997 and 2003 the group received funding from the University of A Coruña (through its Vicerrectorado de Investigación) and the Autonomous Government of Galicia for research on English Medieval Dialects and the Fit-Technique (PR-404A PROY 99-145).

MuStE members have also participated in several research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture and by the Automomous Government of Galicia from 1991 to the present. These projects dealt with variation and language change, DGICYT (PB90-0370); Verbal idioms in the history of English, DGES (PB96-0955); Prepositional constructions in the history of English, DGES (BFF 2000-0492); Collocations and technical English, HUM 2005-00-562/FIL.

The group has received funding from 2003 to carry on the compilation of the Coruña Corpus (Read more) and associated research on English scientific writing between the 17th and 19th centuries. The University of A Coruña and the Autonomous Government of Galicia (PGIDIT03PXIB10402PR; PGIDIT07PXIB104160PR) have provided funding for this research until 2010.

MuStE also receives some extra funding from the Autonomous Government, Xunta de Galicia, Consellería de Educación e Coordenación Universitaria (2007/000145-0) and the Spanish Ministry of Science (2008-2011).

The Autonomous Government of Galicia funded another project on scientific discourse and women, entitled Discurso científico e muller: contexto social e variación na lingua inglesa (1700-1930) (10 PXIB 167 061 PR) from 2010 to 2013.

During the period 2014-2016 the group carried out the compilation of CHET (Corpus of History English Texts) and CECheT (Corpus of English Chemical Texts), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (grant number FFI2013-42215-P) within its National Programme for excelence in Scientific and Technical Research.

During the period 2017-2019, some of MuStE members together with some external collaborators have been completing CHET and CECheT as well as selecting samples for CETeL (Corpus of English Texts on Language) with funding for the same National Programme for excelence in Scientific and Technical Research (FFI2016-75599-P).

Some Muste members have also worked in the teaching project “Development of the interdisciplinary master program on Computational Linguistics at Central Asian UniverSitieS / CLASS” funded by the “Erasmus+ Key Action 2 – Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices – Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education” for the period October 2017-October 2021.

The funding granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (grant number PID2019-105226GB-I00) for the three years from June 2020 to May 2023 has been devoted to finishing CETeL and CECheT, and starting the compilation of CETePh (Corpus of English Texts on Physics).

From September 2023 to August 2026, we will face the completion of CETeL, work on CETePh and start the compilation process of CEGeT thanks to the funding received from the Spanish Research Agency (AEI), grant number PID2022-136500NB-I00.

Coruña Corpus

The Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing

The Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing is one of the projects currently being carried out in the University of A Coruña (Spain) by the Research Group for Multidimensional Corpus-based Studies in English (MuStE). The team is in the process of creating a corpus that can be used for the diachronic study of scientific discourse from most linguistic levels and thereby contribute to the study of the historical development of English for specific purposes. At the same time, we believe that the Coruña Corpus is an excellent tool for the study of the scientific register/style at particular moments in history: it offers the researcher the chance to analyse how this "Specific English" behaves from a synchronic point of view.

The compilation of the Coruña Corpus has been and is still governed by some of the most common parameters used in Corpus Linguistics, namely, external criteria for the delimitation of dates, sampling techniques, number of words per sample, etc.

Many pilot studies have already proved the utility of the Coruña Corpus.

The UNESCO classification of the fields of Science and Technology (International Standardisation of Statistics on Science and Technology, UNESCO 1978, 1988) has provided a starting point for text and discipline selection as we intend to include texts from all or most of these categories.

The Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC) is, therefore, a specialised corpus covering several different scientific disciplines. It is divided in subcorpora depending on domain or discipline. From the start of the project in 2004 it was designed to contain 10,000-word samples (at a rate of two per decade and discipline) of scientific works published between 1700 and 1900 and that had been directly written in English by English-speaking authors.

In order to avoid repetitions of patterns caused by idiosyncrasies of authors, one of the principles of the CC is to include only one sample per author in the whole corpus, even when some of them were certainly prolific in different fields of knowledge.

All the subcorpora in the CC share the same compilation principles, structure and mark-up and have been edited in XML following TEI conventions to facilitate contrastive studies. Similarly, they are all formed by a multi-field indexed textual repository which is used by the information retrieval platform accompanying them (Coruña Corpus Tool, CCT). This index allows searches using different criteria contained not only in the samples but also in the metadata files with information both about authors and texts.

Compilation has been carried out always following the same sampling criteria (see Crespo and Moskowich, 2010, CETA in the Context of the Coruña Corpus, Literary and Linguistic Computing, 25/2: 153-164). This includes preserving and representing certain special characters and symbols which can be seen when using the CCT.

Subcorpora in the Coruña Corpus

CETA (Corpus of English Texts on Astronomy) came out in 2012 accompanied by a book containing both works on methodological aspects as well as some pilot studies.

The team has also been working on the subject matter of Philosophy to compile CEPhiT (Corpus of English Philosophy Texts) whose compilation is detailed here and which was released in March 2016 together with a book.

From 2019, both CETA and CEPhiT, as well as the following subcorpora (CHET, Corpus of History English Texts, and CELiST, Corpus of English Life Sciences Texts, so far) have been publshed in open access.

We are currently finishing CECheT (Corpus of English Chemistry Texts), as well as starting the search for suitable samples relating to diverse aspects of the study of languages and philology for the compilation of CETeL (Corpus of English Texts on Language) in the near future.

The Corpus of English Texts on Astronomy (CETA) is part of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). As a specialised corpus, CETA has been compiled for the description of English Astronomy writing between 1700 and 1900, from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. All text files in CETA are accompanied by a metadata file with extensive information about the text sampled and its author's sociolinguistic background. Samples can be filtered according to certain parameters contained in the metadata files.

The Corpus of English Life Sciences Texts (CELiST) is a subcorpus of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). Corpus of English Texts on Physics

The Corpus of English Texts on Physics (CETePh) will be the seventh subcorpus of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). The samples in it will try to represent late Modern English writing on different aspects of Physics from 1700 to 1900, thus containing texts on mechanics, hydraulics, electricity, magnetism and other domains of study in the field. CETePh will be used to describe the evolution of the language typical of this discipline as well as variation within it. As with all the other subcorpora in the Coruña Corpus, each text file in CETePh will be accompanied by a metadata file providing information about the text sampled and its author's sociolinguistic background. Metadata files can be also used to select the texts to work with through the 2019 version of the Coruña Corpus Tool.

CCT latest version

The Coruña Corpus Tool was first released in 2012 when CETA came out (CD-ROM). Since then, it has been often updated and improved. The two more relevant changes occurred in 2019 and 2020 in order to make the application lighter and able to deal with chemical formulae in the search option as both CELiST and CEChET may require this utility. The version to be found in open access will always be the last one.
