Course pre-requisites: B1 level.
The course aims to develop the English language skills within the European legal context, by presenting some fundamental legal English terminology (BE/AE) and introducing some European Legal institutions, covering a wide variety of legal vocabulary. The course is designed to equip the participants with substantial knowledge of legal vocabulary and to improve their general English writing ability while deepening the study of a specialized foreign language for those enrolled inhumanities or legal studies, future translators in the legal field and the general public. Participants shall learn to read and understand legal texts such as Articles of Law and legal correspondence. In addition, they will practice their writing skills by writing a summary or an essay. Speaking skills will be practiced through (group) discussions/ presentations and role-play.
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe the European legal system in a broad outline, use correctly legal terminology, understand the legal institution, be aware of the specialized vocabulary related to the EU legal system.
A blended-learning approach will be used during the course consisting of online resources and in-class workshops, vocabulary and grammar exercises, reading and comprehension.

The used chapters will be provided.
Students are expected to read the assigned texts. The quizzes taken each two days are designed to check students’ familiarity with the assigned readings. Also, quizzes count 10% of the final grade.
Group short presentation (10-15 minutes) on a freely chosen topic closely related to the relevant chapters of the recommended readings shall count 10% of the final grade.
First Week Test: an objective test on the material covered in the first week, 40%.
Second Week Test: an objective test on the material covered in the second week, 40%.
