Course Overview
Earthquakes are a natural disaster. Many countries of the world are located in the earthquake zone. This is a great problem of mankind. Various design buildings designed in those areas should be calculated on seismic resistance. Design and calculation methods of multistorey buildings with different constructive schemes are being developed, and computer programs are widely used. The course covers the basics of engineering seismology, the earthquake-proof theory of earthquake engineering, earthquake resistant forms, structures, aseismic actions, earthquake forecasting, elimination of earthquake consequences, tsunamis, landslides and readiness for earthquakes, types of inspection of buildings and constructions.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students should be able to determine the type of earthquake, reason of occurrence of earthquakes, how soil conditions influence the intensity of earthquakes. Students will be informed with principles of design of aseismic buildings and constructions, modern methods of inspection of buildings and constructions.

Course Content

  1. General information about earthquakes. The causes of earthquakes, earthquake mechanism. Results of some destructive earthquakes. Dangerous consequences of earthquakes and elimination of their consequences.
  2. Types of seismic waves. Assessment of earthquakes. Seismic instruments and seismic scales. Magnitude and intensity.
  3. Influence of the soil conditions on the intensity of earthquakes. Seismic zonation and seismic microzonation.
  4. Determination of seismic loading by Omori's static theory. The dynamic theory of determination of seismic loading. The dynamic theory of Mononobe. Buildings codes of some countries.
  5. Principles of design of aseismic buildings and constructions. Design of masonry, large-panel and frame buildings in seismic countries. Seismic resistant constructions. inspection of constructions.
  6. Research of seismic resistant multi-story buildings.
  7. Inspection of buildings and constructions. Destructive test methods of designs. Nondestructive test methods of designs. Acoustic test methods of designs.

Instructional Method
Interactive Lectures, presentations.
Students will be acquainted with the lecture topics in advance. And therefore, they will actively participate in lectures, as they will collect sufficient information about all the lectures in advance.
