Pablo Arias (Physical Activity and Sport Science Ph. D.) is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, Universidade da Coruña. From 2008, he coordinates a branch of research in NEUROcom, focussed on motor control/learning and neurorehabilitation. He was a former pre-doc in NEUROcom and his postdoctoral formation was acquired in different labs, like the FENNSI group in Hospital Nacional de Parapléjicos de Toledo; the Unitat d’EMG del Hospital Clinic de Barcelona; or the Laboratoire d'Imagerie Biomédicale, Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, in Paris; under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Oliviero, Dr. Josep Valls-Solé and Dr. Véronique Marchand-Pauvert, respectively.
He participated in different research grants and currently he is principal investigator in the project "Gait training combined with non-invasive brain stimulation to reduce fatigue and the risk of falls in the elderly" funded by Plan Nacional de I+D+i 2017 Ministerio de Economía y Empresa, Spain.
Scientific Interests
His main interests are focused on the understanding of central expressions of fatigue produced by different types of movements and muscular contractions, with special interest in gait, both at physiological and pathological levels. He is also interested in the mechanisms of motor learning and their putative applications in neurorehabilitation.
He has got skills in biomechanics and neurophysiology, using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation to evaluate cortico-cortical and cortico-spinal excitability, or electric percutaneous stimulation to evaluate the spinal excitability. In some cases these techniques are combined with neuromodulation techniques and virtual reality.
