Course Overview

First week: Cultural heritage protection management, on the example of Armenian heritage architecture

A carefully crafted course introduces participants to Armenian history and culture, covering research, restoration, and conservation methods. Explore the unique legacy that defines Armenia's identity in a straightforward and comprehensive manner.

Second week: Skill development in architectural design presentations

Based on a succeed case studies and on a few realized projects, participants of the workshop will be introduced to the process of the architectural projection and to the analytical understanding of the value and the role of the creative thinking, negotiation process and problem solutions in architectural design. They will pass through all this steps and will by the combination of the lectures, and following practical exercises will get the importance of the abovementioned. 

Learning Outcomes

First week: 

By the conclusion of the program, participants will acquire a solid foundation of knowledge encompassing Armenian prehistorical antiquity, Christian heritage, and the modern cultural landscape.

  • Comprehensive Understanding: Develop a profound comprehension of Armenian prehistorical, Christian, and contemporary cultural heritage.
  • Critical Evaluation: Skillfully assess cultural heritage by adeptly describing the significance and characteristics of various monuments.
  • Research Proficiency: Gain expertise in researching heritage structures, effectively analyzing their historical context, and delineating the different construction phases.
  • Conservation Strategy: Cultivate the ability to formulate innovative conservation methods, particularly in the context of new projects, demonstrating a holistic approach to preserving Armenia's cultural legacy.

Second week:

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • provide their projects presentation more attentive to detail also the graphical part, as well as understand the importance of psychological communications;
  • could distinguish and synchronise the main key parts of their future and current architectural presentations;

• will try and understand the analytic way of preparing the feasibility study for the design concept

 

Course Content

First week: 

Day 01: Introduction and Historical Overview

  • Overview of the course objectives and structure
  • In-depth lecture on the history of Armenian Architecture

Day 02: Construction Techniques and Survey Methods

  • Exploration of construction methods employed in preserving cultural heritage in Armenia
  • Practical insights into survey methods for heritage sites

Day 03: World Heritage Sites in Armenia

  • Comprehensive exploration of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List in Armenia
  • Understanding the significance and preservation challenges of these sites

Day 04: Case Study - Yererouk Cathedral Research and Conservation

  • In-depth examination of the research and conservation project focused on Yererouk Cathedral
  • Insights into the challenges faced and successful strategies implemented

Day 05: Case Study - Bardsraqash Monastery Research and Conservation

  • Detailed exploration of the research and conservation project centered around Bardsraqash Monastery
  • Analysis of the unique aspects of the project and lessons learned

Throughout the course, participants will engage in a dynamic learning experience that incorporates realized success stories, infographics, and lateral thinking methodologies to actively enhance creative thinking skills.

Second week:

The course consist of five lectures, introducing realized succeed stories, as well as, based on the infographic and lateral thinking methodology will practically develop the creative thinking.

Accordingly –

Day  01

  • Introduction to the course,
  • and exercise “Sketching under the music” author's special methodology.

Day  02  

  • presentation of the architectural design of “Valar” and “GP” private houses in Vahagni neighborhood,
  • presentation of the architectural design of the “Ervandashat” new Community project concept

Day  03

  • Lecture “Yerevan Skate park project based on the realized project of the first Yerevan Skate park case (Armenia 2020).
  • “Concept of the “Memory” forest park in the Yerevan Botanical garden” based on the project case (Armenia 2021).

Day  04

  • lecture “Design Concept of the meeting hall for small and medium business enterprises” based on the realized project for Convers Bank
    (Armenia 2018)
  • “Concept design of the architectural organization of the “Garage”
    public/ commercial/ business center” based on the project case (Armenia 2018)

Day  05  

  • Lecture “Design concept for the “HAY POST Tower” -public center for education, business and convention activities” based on the project case (Armenia 2020)
  • Lecture “Multidimensional Architecture” about the implementation of metaphysical factors in architectural design.

 

As the bonus lecture, for the participants will be suggested short lecture concerning “how to prepare architectural presentation, and how to be ready for a work interview”.

Instructional Method

After all lectures and following discussions the practical exercises will be provide during all days,  as well as instructional methods include lectures; group works etc.

Required Course Materials

The whole course will be better understanded by the architect students from second year and above. For the deeper outcomes students should have stuff for hand sketching, laptops, and willing to do a homework for further discussions at the class.

Assessment

The students’ assessment will be done based on practical works implemented by students, and on a presence for all topics.
