Building a habitat: guidelines for land and housing planning of indigenous community María del Mar

"Habitat does not mean house, but rather food and roof" (Yona Friedman)

Solve the everyday need to feed on the land according to criteria of economy and optimizing resources will drive to try to overcome the adverse conditions of the area and achieve agricultural production that responds to needs of the community.

Water, a essential factor for the development of crop appears intermittently in the area, it flows... Just its presence changes the spaces, and their absence in the dry months, change completely the character of these places, even disappearing. Will attempt to control water through channels that collect, carry, storage and distribute intertwining the different areas of the plot.

The network of canals organizes the crop and also defines clusters of houses. The canal, becomes a ditch where to take water to irrigate the garden and separates us from the neighbors. The extensive grounds of the intervention begins to have limits: subtle nuances are appearing where the territory is being inhabited.

Current housing at María del Mar is basically a covered space. A place that suits the different uses becoming a room where to play, to sew or meet depending on the time of day and the needs of its inhabitants. Do not miss this idea seems essential: housing must be a continuous porch capable of supporting as many uses as it's necessary.

A bamboo structure capable of housing in its interior a closed space is proposed. In some cases the skeleton will be closed, in others it will remain open. The cover extends over the space protecting it from sun and rain, creating a perimeter porch around it. As in traditional Mayan hut, after building the first core, and taking the form of separate buildings, they will making additions based on income and family needs. However, the proposed module allows that the successive additions connect with the existing space using the porch, admitting infinite configurations.

What is shown on the drawings is not a final project, a solution... is a possible state, a stage. It is the indigenous community of María del Mar represented at any given time. Some homes appear unfinished, pending of materials, revenues that have to come, and uses not defined yet..

Building as an ongoing process where time is treated as an another architectural agent more.
