It is a code that appears on a label on the back of the documents that indicates where exactly the books and other library materials are placed.
In our library, the code or call number is alphanumeric and almost always consists of three parts, the first two of which reflect the subject of the document.
You can consult all the library call numbers in the Library Clasmark Table and also in the Plane to locate them.
Most of the documents that are in direct access have a call number built in the following way:
• A code that can be alphabetic or alphanumeric indicating the subject of the book.
• A letter that indicates subdivision of matter.
• An order number.
For instance:
In the bookshelves of the reading room you will find informative billboard with the subjects and the subdivisions of subjects that reflect the codes to facilitate your orientation in the space.
* Accompanying Material: if any book is accompanied by audiovisual material, it has the same call number, but you will not find it on the bookshelf. You have to ask for it at the lending desk since this type of material is not in direct access.
In this case the call number consists of:
• A code that indicates the type of support or reference material and its location. They are the following:
Ra. Atlas, 1st floor.
Rd. Dictionaries, 1st floor.
Re. Encyclopedias, 1st floor.
Rd1. Dictionaries, 2nd floor.
Re1. Encyclopedias, 2nd floor.
• An order number.
For instance:
Funds that are in the deposit you have to request them at the lending desk and the call number consists of:
• The DSOC code, which indicates that they are funds located in the deposit.
• An order number.
For instance:
It must be requested at the library desk. The code of the cinema collection consists of:
• the DVD code.
• One of this codes, depending on the type of material:
ANIM. If they are animation movies.
CINE. If they are movies.
DOC. If they are documentaries.
SERIES. If they are television series.
• An order number.
For instance:
Once you have located the item in the Catalog, you must take into account:
In the document record it will appear if it is a Recommended Bibliography of any subject and the versions available for consultation.
You can find on the same page the link to access the full text of the documents that have an electronic version.
To locate the documents in paper format, you must look at the location (library where it is located), the number of copies they have, and how many of them are available for loan.
You have to log in with your passwords so that from the catalog you can see the loan conditions of each document according to your type of user.
In the Library the books are arranged and grouped by the subject that each one deals with (call numbers table).
The code that indicate the subject of a book also indicate the bookshelf in which it is placed. Always consult the library plan after consulting the catalog to go through it..
In each boolshelf you will find the codes of subjects and sections and what they mean. for example, in the bookshelf with code A are the books of Anthropology. These main subjects or Sections are subdivided into more specific subfields. Thus, within section A (Anthropology) they are:
A Reference
B Generalia Class
C Etnography and Ethnology
D Cultural Anthropology
E Social Anthropology
F Economic and Political Anthropology
On each bookshelf there are posters that indicate what subjects and sections you will find in them.
They are sorted by the call number ( see what is the call number?), indicated on a label on the back of the documents.
First, the books are grouped by the code that indicates the subject:
A C 150 |
Then they group by the letter that indicates subdivision of subject:
A C 150 |
And finally, the are sorted by the number of the bottom:
A C 1 2 3 4 5 6... |
Roman numerals indicate volumes:
A C 298-I |
A C 298-II |
If two books are the same they only differ in one letter:
A C 267a |
A C 267b |
A C 267c |
A C 267d |
