About book lending

What is the signature?

It is a code that indicates where exactly the books and other materials are located in the library.

It is attached to a label on the spine of the books.

It has:

  • A number that indicates the subject to which the book belongs
  • The first three letters of the author's last name (or title)
  • An order number. For example:

053

AYR

1

At the top of the shelves there are two numbers that coincide with the first two numbers of each signature:

estantes

How to find a book on the shelf?

In the library the books are ordered and grouped by subject.

The first three digits of a book's signature (see What is the signature?) indicate both the subject matter a book is about and the shelf on which it is placed.

At the top of each shelf you will find the numbers of the main subjects (or sections) and what they mean. For example, on the shelves above 01 are the math books.

These subjects or main sections are subdivided into more specific sub-subjects. Thus, within section 01 (Mathematics) are:

010 General works of Mathematics

011 Algebra

012 Calculation ...

On each shelf there are signs that indicate what materials you will find on them.

How are the books arranged on the shelf?

They are ordered by signature (see What is the signature?), on the label on the spine of each book.

  • First, the books are grouped by the first three digits:

053

AYR

1

  • Then they are sorted on the shelf alphabetically, by the letters that appear below:

053

AYR

1

053         053         053         053         053         053

AYR         BIR         BOR        BRI         BRI         BRO

  1             1              1             1            1-C           1

  • And finally, they are ordered by the number at the bottom:

032         032         032         032         032         032

BAS         BAS        BAS        BED        BED        BED

  1           1-C            2              1             2             3

  • Roman numerals indicate volumes:

056         056

PUE       PUE

  1             1

 (I)          (II)

  • If two books are the same, they only differ by one letter:

112         112         112         112

ASP         ASP        ASP          ASP

1            1-C         1-D           2   (this would be a different book or a more recent edition, with changes to the content)

What does the color of the book labels mean?

White label (on loan)             Red dot (weekends or holidays)     Red label (not on loan, scan / photocopy only)

tejuelos

What is the weekend loan?

A loan that is allowed only on Fridays or the eve of holidays, for some books, almost always from the recommended bibliography. Thus, in the event that all the copies in the library are on loan, we guarantee that there will always be at least one copy left during the week to be consulted.

These books are loaned on Friday or the eve of holidays at any time and they are returned on Monday or the day after the holiday.

When a holiday falls on Thursday, these books are loaned on Wednesday and returned the following Monday.

When a holiday falls on Tuesday, these books are loaned on Friday and returned on Wednesday.

The labels on these books have a red dot:

prest-finde

How to renew the books I have on loan?

Books cannot be renewed:

  • If someone else needs them (and made a reservation).
  • If you renew them online and the loan term has already expired (even if it only passed one day). If the deadline has expired, call the Library as soon as possible.
  • If too many days have passed since the deadline and you have a penalty for delays in the return (see Penalties for late returns).

You can do it:

  • At the information desk of any University library, showing the university identification card. You do not need to bring the books you want to renew.
  • By phone (881 011 460)
  • Online, entering the link Renew loans in the library catalog:

renovar

On the next screen we fill in the data that they ask us:

mylibraryaccount

If you press "Submit", you can renew your loans.

What is my PIN to access my loans on the library website?

The PIN to access the book renewal screen or see the loans you have, is not the same as the one you use to check e-mail or to connect to the Internet via WIFI.

The PIN consists of four numeric digits.

If you do not know it, you can consult it at http://servizos.udc.es

Connect to this page with your usual username and password and once inside:

recuperarPIN

Click on "recover the card pin" (for security reasons it will ask for your password again).

How many times can I renew a loan?

As many times as you want, except that:

  • Someone else needs the book (and will make a reservation).
  • You are going to renew the book online and the loan term has already expired (even if it only took one day). If the deadline has passed, call the Library as soon as possible.
  • Too many days have passed since the deadline and you have a penalty for delays in the return (see Penalties for late returns).

Are there penalties for late returns?

For each day late in returning or renewing a book, the loan program adds a penalty or demerit point. It does this for each book. So, if you return two books two days late, you will accumulate 4 penalty points.

The points are added with each accumulated delay and when it reaches 10 points or more, this accumulation supposes a blocking of the card, therefore you will not be able to take books on loan.

This sanction lasts for as many days as points you have accumulated.
