Regulations for the admission of students

(Passed by the Senate on the 7th of June 2000)

Requests for admission from students from other universities who wish to start or continue studies in this university, and from students of this university who wish to continue the same studies in a different centre on a different campus and students with overseas studies will be resolved according to the following criteria:

FIRST.- START OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES

Students who wish to start in the first cycle of any University of A Coruña qualifications must request admission in the corresponding qualification, proving that they fulfill the legal requirements current when they ask for admission..

  1. Qualifications with limited places

Requests must be presented in the LERDs, within the period established by the CIUG.
The CIUG will put the requests in order and grant the places available in accordance with the ruling established in RD 69/2000 of the 21st of January and in the agreement signed by the three Galician universities.

  2. Qualifications without limited places

Requests should be presented in the centre in which the subject the student wishes to study is taught. All students who prove to meet with the necessary requirements to study the corresponding course will have a right to admission.

SECOND.- CONTINUATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES

Students who started their studies in another university and who wish to continue the same studies in the University of A Coruña can request admission as long as they meet the following requisites:

  1. They must have passed completely the first year of these studies, in the case of non-reformed teaching, or 60 credits in the case of reformed teaching .
  2. They must not have run out of the opportunities established in the rules for remaining in the university.

Students who do not meet with the criteria established in the above will be subject to the general regime of allocation of places.

  1. Qualifications with limited places
A limitation for continuing students of 10% of the limit will be established for access to the first year.
Requests will be placed in the order for available places according to the average mark on the academic record for the month of June of the current year.
The average mark will be calculated according to the following criteria:
The sum of the credits each multiplied by the value of the corresponding qualification, based on the equivalence table (Not present, Fail or Annulation: 0; Pass: 1; "Notable": 2; "Sobresaliente": 3; "Matricula de Honor": 4), and divided by the sum of the number of credits of subjects for which the student has been at one time registered.
To this effect, all validated subjects will have an equivalence of 1; for adapted subjects the mark awarded by the centre of origin will be counted and the recognition of credits which have no mark will not be taken into account.
In syllabuses not structured in terms of credits, the average mark will be calculated by the following criteria:
The sum of the credits each multiplied by the value of the corresponding qualification, based on the same table in the above paragraph. The result will be divided by the total number of subjects for which the student has been registered. In the case of four-month or six-month subjects, half of the value of the mark in the sum and half of the signature in the divisor will be calculated. In this case subjects which have been passed without a mark or voluntary subjects will not be counted.
  2. Qualifications without limited places
Requests should be presented in the centre in which the subject the student wishes to continue studying is taught. All students who prove to meet with the necessary requirements to continue to study the corresponding course will have a right to admission.

THIRD.- OVERSEAS STUDIES

Requests for places by students with partial or full overseas university studies which have not been ratified by the Ministry of Education and Culture which specifically indicate the possibility of partial validation with a view to continuing the same or similar studies in Spanish universities will be resolved according to the following criteria:

  1. Qualifications with limited places:

Only students with the entire first year validated can be admitted (in the old syllabus) or a minimum of 60 credits (new syllabus) can be admitted. They must also have an average mark on their academic record equal or superior to the last student admitted under section Second. 1. S

  2. Qualifications without limited places:

Only students with at least one validated subject (old syllabus) or a minimum of 15 credits (new syllabus) can be admitted.

Students who do not receive partial validation must pass the access examination for Spanish universities unless validated pre-university studies give them direct access to the university without the need to pass the access exams, without prejudicing the time priorities and evaluation criteria established in the Royal Decree 69/2000 of the 21st of January.

FOURTH.- ACCESS TO SECOND CYCLES

Students who have first-cycle qualifications or who have passed the first cycle of courses which lead to a second cycle which has been recognised under the Royal Decree RD 1497/1987.

  • Second cycles without a limited number of places
These can be divided into two possible cases:
    • Students who have passed the first cycle of degree course.Pupils that surpass the first cycle of a degree.
      • If there is no second cycle in their own University, these students must apply to the Centre with proof that they comply with the established criteria.
      • If the second cycle does exist, applicants must do as above, while also justifying their place of residence.
    • Students with a first cycle qualification.
    • These students need not apply for admission. They can register directly.
  • Second cycles with a limited number of places
The application must be submitted to the LERD in A Coruña or Ferrol together with by the applicant's personal academic record with all the grades obtained, and justifying the payment of all the necessary costs of certification in order to be able to register.

    Entry criteria:

    • Priority treatment is given to students or graduates of the first cycle of this University. Equal treatment will be given to applicants who can justify a change of residence, those who apply to study subjects which are not available in their own University or university district.
    • Applications will be considered in the following order of preference:
      • a. Firstly, to students who have passed the first cycle of the course in or before the previous June (as long as they have not already passed the second cycle).
      • b. Secondly, students who pass the first cycle of the course in September of the current academic year.
    • The assessment criteria used to distribute the places among applicants in the same phase will be the following:
      • a. For Technical Engineering and Diploma courses or in the first cycle of old syllabus courses: The average grade on the academic record for the subjects needed to gain admission to the course, which will be valued as follows:
        Aprobado 1 - Notable 2 - Sobresaliente 3 - Matrícula de Honor 4
      • b. For first cycle qualifications, or for the first cycle of the new syllabus of degree or engineering courses (R.D. 1267/1994 which modifies R.D. 1497/1987)
        Aprobado 1 - Notable 2 - Sobresaliente 3 - Matrícula de Honor 4
These grades will be judged by the following criteria: The sum of the credits, each of which is multiplied by the corresponding grade, using the above table, which will then be divided by the total number of credits for the corresponding teaching.
For this process, validated subjects will be awarded a mark of 1. All credits for grades received will be added, but where no grades are given the corresponding credits will not be counted.
      • c. Because of the special characteristics of the Degree in Humanities, the following criteria will be applied: students who have studied in the area of Humanities will have their grades multiplied by 1.5.
Despite the 3rd section mentioned above, 5% of places will be reserved for applicants who can prove that they are graduates or qualified engineers whose first cycle was followed by a second cycle. These applicants can never use their first cycle that they have passed in order to gain access to the second cycle. The assessment of these students' records will be made using the criteria outlined in the 4th area above.
If there are any places left after each of these quotas, these will be accumulated to the next quota until all the places have been covered.
