After more than 40 years’ experience in integrated coastal zone management, in the USA and in many other parts of the world (in Asia, Africa and Latin America, in particular), Stephen Olsen has developed a methodology that tailors the way coastal areas and marine ecosystems are managed to the individual circumstances of each location. The implementation of this new system will require a ‘process of change’ based on environmental, economic and social sustainability, taking into account the specific characteristics of each geographical environment and valuing most especially the participation of social groups and agents.

The CRC Director’s presentation of the main elements and principles of coastal zone and marine ecosystem management will provide a welcome opportunity for debate and discussion on the great challenges facing directors, managers and researchers in this area today.
