This
shrine was projected by the academic architect Julián Sánchez
Bort, as of 1763, for the new slum that was erected in the city of Ferrol.
In its centralized layout and in the first projects, there were architectural
concepts and compositives of the Renaissance, reformed in the final work.
It has a Greek cross layout, covered with a great dome that does not let its shell to be visible from the exterior. The frontispiece repeats Mannerism compositive models, with two superposed bodies and projecting ashlar jambs, within the frame of two high towers. The Italian influence is present in the work of this academic, also creator of the new facade of the cathedral of Lugo, an architecture that is not completely neoclassical, although developed during the Illustration process, following the artistic standards of the Academy of San Fernando.
The urban structure of the
new barrio (neighborhood) of the Magdalena, conceived by Jorge Juan and
completed by the same Sánchez Bort, is a network with two symmetrical
squares that have two outstanding blocks where this shrine, San Julián,
and the Jofre theater, were built in front of the frontispiece of the Naval
Arsenal, also built by this architect.
